Guidescope Increases Businesses' Internet Productivity by Helping Employees Cut Through the Clutter of Web Ads

New Service Speeds Employee Access to the Internet Makes Them More Efficient and Effective On-Line

Mendham, New Jersey - June 1, 2000 - Guidescope, Inc., a privately held Company based in New Jersey, today unveiled the most technologically advanced ad-filtering solution available to help businesses make their employees faster, safer and more efficient on the Internet. Guidescope, which costs about $10 per employee per year, was developed to help companies speed their employees' access to information on the Internet by foregoing the downloading of ads on Web sites they visit. Using a proprietary, patent pending collaborative database, Guidescope blocks unwanted ads and graphics so they are never downloaded.

"The Guidescope service impacts a company's bottom line by increasing its employees' efficiency when using the Internet," said Thomas Matheson, President of Guidescope, Inc. "If employees spend less time waiting for information to appear on their screens and are less distracted by ads, they will get more work done."

The key to the Guidescope service is its collaborative database of Web advertisements, which it uses to filter out ads from Web sites users visit. Once the service is downloaded from the Guidescope Web site and installed, the Guidescope Menu appears in a small window on each employee's desktop. With a simple mouseclick on the "Start Block" icon on the Guidescope Menu, users engage the powerful filter, and immediately begin to get Web sites up to 3 times faster. Guidescope tested the homepages of the 50 most popular Web sites as published by MediaMetrix. Most sites downloaded 1.5 times faster; those with more ads downloaded up to 3 times faster.

Guidescope's ad-filtering process is unique in that it blocks ads others miss. By using not only the standard pattern-matching techniques employed by other products – which may fail to block ads which do not match a specific size, dimension criteria, or source profile – but also using a central database able to identify individual ads on individual sites, Guidescope blocks almost twice as many ads as the competition. And because the Web community of Guidescope users constantly adds to the collaborative database, it is always up-to-date and ever expanding.

In addition to increasing efficiency, Guidescope also increases Internet privacy for its users. Many ad companies record where Web users surf whenever one of their ads is viewed. By tracking their ads, they know what sites Web users visit and when they go there. By blocking ads, Guidescope blocks the recording and helps protect employees' privacy. Guidescope can even block "Web Bugs" (tiny, invisible graphics) from similarly recording employees' surfing. Guidescope also protects employees' privacy by preventing browsers from "leaking" private information from one site, where an employee might have filled out a form, to the next site visited. (All browsers transmit "referrer" information, which in some cases can accidentally cause leaks like this.)

"Internet Ad companies spend a lot of money building databases with the surfing and buying habits of Web users that they track through their ads," added Matheson. "Most Companies probably don't want another organization knowing where their employees are going and what they are doing on the Internet — Guidescope helps prevent that from happening."

Guidescope also helps employees surf the Web easier with a simple, convenient user interface including one-click access to search engines, reference tools, and a powerful Web archive.

"We know most consumers are interested in seeing marketing messages, but they and their employers don't want these ads taking up valuable time during work hours," continued Matheson. "We believe that Opt-In advertising, like what we offer to Guidescope users, is the next logical step in the evolution of Internet advertising because it gives users control over marketing messages and when they receive them."

Users can actively update the Guidescope database by clicking the "Ad List" icon to see a list of graphics and new ads which they have recently viewed and selectively block any or all of them. When any user in the Guidescope Web community blocks a new ad, the ad is automatically submitted to the Guidescope database. Once it is in the Guidescope database, the ad is filtered out for every Guidescope user — all users receive the benefits of the ever-growing collaborative database.
