Installation Checklist
Why isn't your software working for me?

The vast majority of problems that users have has to do with browser set up. Here are the things we generally ask people to try:
  1. Check that you see the Guidescope Icon in your Windows Tray. If you don't, then our software isn't running on your computer. You might not have installed it. Be sure to double-click on the install package you downloaded to run the InstallShield and install our software. If you've already done this, then you might need to reboot your computer.

  2. Next, check that your browser is talking to our software by going to:

If you get to our home page and see "Welcome to Guidescope!", then everything is working okay. If you don't, then your browser is not talking to our software. Please follow the instructions that show up instead. Please make sure you have set up your browser as described here.

  3. If you are using IE and have multiple ISPs showing in the "Dial-up settings" area on IE's "Connections" tab make sure you have set up the correct one(s). You might want to also try setting up the "LAN settings", especially if your ISP is AOL.

  4. If your browser is set up correctly, then something else is stopping your browser from talking to our software. We've seen this problem with people who have used a free ISP. It seems that many of these ISPs install software on their user's computer that disables the browser's proxy capabilities. Sometimes uninstalling the free-ISP software solves the problem but sometimes it doesn't. Some of the free-ISP software breaks it so it's impossible to use a proxy with other ISPs' software as well.

  5. We've also seen copies of IE supplied by some sites, such as Juno, that have been modified to ignore their proxy settings. If you are using IE and you didn't get your copy of IE from Microsoft, you can try "repairing" Internet Explorer: In Windows' "Settings" - "Control Panel", run "Add/Remove Programs". Select "Microsoft IE..." and click on "Add/Remove...". On the form that pops up, select "Repair Internet Explorer".

  6. If everything is okay so far, please take a look at our manual page which describes how to open the Guidescope Menu.

  7. If all else fails, our uninstall instructions are here.
