How to Block Ads
How do I block ads?

Block ads or other unwanted graphics using the Ad List from the Guidescope Menu, shown on the right.

If you see an ad on a page that you've downloaded in the past 15 minutes, here's how to block the ad:
  1. Make sure that ad blocking is on by checking the Guidescope Menu. If it is off, then press the "Ad Blk. is OFF" switch to turn ad blocking on. (If the Guidescope Menu isn't already open on your computer's desktop, first click here to open it, then return to this page.)

  1. The Ad List: Click for a larger view (24kB) Open the Ad List in a new window by clicking on "Ad List" on the Guidescope Menu.

  2. Check the boxes on the Ad List that are next to the ads you want to block, as shown on the right.

  3. Press the "BLOCK" button.
As soon as the Ad List closes, the ads you selected are blocked on your computer and submitted for inclusion in our central ad-blocking database!

What if I can't find the ad I want in the Ad List?

If you can't find the ad in the Ad List, your browser's cache might be preventing it from being downloaded. Here's how you can force your browser to download the ad so it will appear in the Ad List:

  1. With ad blocking on, force your browser to download the page with the graphics that you want to see:

    • If your browser is IE, hold down the "control" key on your computer's keyboard (labeled "Ctrl" or "CNTL") and click on IE's "Refresh" button.

    • If your browser is Netscape, hold down the "Shift" key on your computer's keyboard and click on Netscape's "Reload" button.

  2. As soon as the page has finished loading, follow the instructions above.

Read more about how your browser's cache affects ad blocking here.

If you still can't see the ad in the Ad List, then the ad might not be a graphical ad. Some ads are text-only or are forms formatted to look like ads. The Guidescope service only blocks graphical ads. Non-graphical ads don't show up in the Ad List.

Ads from Internet sites that use SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) do not show up in the Ad list. To protect your privacy and maintain security, we do not block ads on or examine data streams associated with pages of Internet sites that use SSL.
