Browser Setup Needed

If you landed on this page after following our browser set-up instructions and clicking on "Click here to start using the Guidescope service", then your browser isn't yet properly connecting to the Guidescope software. Please check the following common problems:

  1. Is the Guidescope software running?
First, please verify that the Guidescope software is installed and running. Windows users should see the Guidescope Icon in the Windows Tray, as shown on the right.

If the Guidescope software isn't running, then please download and install it.

If you've installed the Guidescope software but it isn't running, then you should reboot your computer.

  2. Did you set up your browser?
Next, if the Guidescope software is running but you haven't yet set up your browser, then please do so by following the instructions here.

  3. Is there a mistake in your browser set up?
If you did set up your browser and the Guidescope software is running, then you might have made a mistake in your browser settings. Please go back and carefully recheck your browser settings. Make sure that they are set as described in our browser set-up instructions.

  4. Have you recently installed IE 5.5?
If you have recently installed Internet Explorer version 5.5, please check to make sure that "Use automatic configuration script" is NOT checked on your Internet Service Provider Settings form. (See Step 6 of IE 5/Windows Setup or IE 5/Windows With Proxy Setup.) Some IE 5.5 installation packages strongly recommend checking this box and some actually check it for you during installation.

We've received reports from users that copies of IE 5.5 supplied by some free ISPs (such as Juno) have been modified by the supplier to ignore proxy settings. Such browsers will not work with the Guidescope service. If you have such a browser, then we suggest getting a fresh copy directly from Microsoft.

  5. Are you using an incompatible free ISP?
If everything is set up and running properly and you are still landing here, then you might be using a free ISP that is overriding your browser's proxy settings. As described on our products page and in our faqs, the Guidescope software doesn't work with free ISPs that override your browser's proxy settings, such as Juno, Excite's FreeLane, Tiny Online, and Freeserve. If you want to use the Guidescope service, you will have to use a free ISP that doesn't override your browser's proxy settings, such as NetZero or BlueLight.
