IE 5/Windows Setup

Connect Internet Explorer 5 to our software:

  1. If you are an AOL user, click here for the proper instructions.

  2. Print out these instructions! After you start following them you won't be able to scroll this window down to see the rest of these instructions.

  3. Start Internet Explorer 5 and make sure that you are connected to the Internet and can browse.

  4. Select "Tools" and "Internet Options..." from IE's top menu, as shown on the right. The "Internet Options" form will pop up, as shown below. Click on the "Connections" tab.

  5. If your Internet connection is via a local area network, DSL, ADSL, ISDN, or cable modem, then click on "LAN Settings..." in the "LAN settings" section, as shown below. Otherwise, if your Internet connection is a dial-up connection, make sure that your Internet service provider is selected under "Dial-up settings" and click on "Settings" in the "Dial-up settings" section. In both cases, another form will open. If you clicked on "Settings", then the Settings form

that opens will be labeled with the name of your Internet Service Provider, as shown on the right. If you clicked on "LAN Settings...", then the top of the form will be labeled with "Local Area Network (LAN) Settings", but will otherwise be identical.

  6. If "Use automatic configuration script" is checked in the "Automatic configuration" section shown above, contact your system administrator before proceeding to find out if you can use a Proxy server instead. (Configuration scripts will override any settings you enter for in the "Proxy server" section.) If you have recently installed IE 5.5 and this box became checked as part of IE installation, then uncheck this box and continue.

  7. If "Automatically detect settings" is checked in the "Automatic configuration" section, uncheck it.

  8. If "Use a proxy server" is already checked, you might already be using a proxy server. Make note of that fact for use in step 10. Otherwise, check "Use a proxy server".

  9. Click on "Advanced" to open the "Proxy Settings" form, shown on the right.

  10. If there are already entries next to "HTTP Proxy", and you noted in step 8 that "Use a proxy server" was already checked, (and you didn't put the entry there during an earlier attempt to set up your browser for our software, and the entry isn't either "localhost" or "127.0.0.1" with port "8000"), then your browser is already using some other proxy. Cancel all the forms and click here for instructions customized for you.   Otherwise, continue with these instructions.

  11. If the checkbox "Use the same proxy server for all protocols" is checked, then uncheck it.

  12. Enter HTTP Address "127.0.0.1" and Port "8000" as shown. Note that the address has three "dots" in it! Do not change the other address or port entries on the form.

  13. Click "OK" to complete the Proxy Settings form.

  14. Click "OK" to complete the Settings form.

  15. Click "OK" to complete the Internet Options form.

  16. Setup is complete. Your browser is now configured to use the Guidescope service.
